Overstay 365+ days: 10-year re-entry ban.
These are automatic and triggered the moment you leave the country.
Deportation and detention risk
Any encounter with law enforcement — a traffic stop, an ID check, an employer audit — can escalate to immigration enforcement. Detention can happen without warning.
Future visa applications become much harder
Every future visa application, ESTA/eTA request, and border crossing will show the overstay. Approvals become slower, denials more common, and interviews longer.
