TSA will not accept it
As of May 7, 2025, TSA requires REAL ID compliant identification for domestic flights. An expired state ID — REAL ID or not — is refused at security.
Financial and government services block you
Banks, notaries, SSA offices, Medicaid enrollment, and voter registration in strict-ID states all require unexpired government photo ID. Expect appointments to be turned away.
Employment I-9 verification fails
An expired state ID is not a valid List B document for I-9 employment verification. New hires can be placed on hold or rescinded until valid ID is produced.
Renewal is simple if caught early
Most states allow online renewal for $10–$40. Wait too long and you may need to reapply in person with full source documents (birth certificate, SSN card, proof of address).
