What happens if your security guard license expires?
Security guard licensing is state-regulated with 1–4 year cycles depending on jurisdiction. Armed vs unarmed cards, private investigator licenses, and firearm permits all stack — and any single lapse can end a shift.

You cannot work security shifts
Employers verify guard cards through state agency portals. Expired cards trigger immediate removal from post.
Wages for shifts worked lapsed can be recovered by the employer.
Armed guard permits are separate and stricter
Armed guard permits require additional training (16–40 hours), range qualification, and background renewal.
Working armed on an expired armed permit = criminal offense in most states.
Firearm qualification cycles are shorter
Most states require annual range qualification and requalification with the specific firearm(s) approved on your permit.
Missing qualification suspends the armed permit even if the card itself is still valid.
PI licenses have separate renewal
Guards who also work as licensed private investigators hold separate PI credentials with different cycles and bond requirements.
Losing one doesn't automatically lose the other, but employer contracts often require both.
Continuing education is state-specific
California requires 32 hours of Guard Card training + annual refresher.
Texas requires Level II, III, IV certifications for different roles — each with separate hours.
Reinstatement can require re-testing
Lapses over 1 year in most states require re-taking the initial training and background check.
Fingerprint fees, live scan, and background rechecks add $100–$300 to the reinstatement cost.
