What happens if your REAL ID expires?

Quick answer:

Since May 7, 2025, TSA requires a REAL ID (or passport) for every domestic flight. If your REAL ID expires, it stops being valid federal ID the moment it does — not the day after. That has knock-on effects far beyond the DMV.

You can't fly domestically with an expired REAL ID

TSA agents scan the expiration date at every checkpoint. An expired card — REAL ID or not — is rejected the same as a fake one.

Your only backup is a passport, passport card, Global Entry card, or military ID. If you don't have one, you may be denied boarding.

Airlines will not refund a missed flight caused by expired ID. TSA won't hold your plane.

Federal buildings and military bases turn you away

Courthouses, Social Security offices, VA medical centers, and secure federal facilities require valid REAL ID or equivalent ID for entry.

An expired card at a federal checkpoint means rebooking whatever appointment brought you there.

In most states, your driving privileges expire too

A REAL ID is your driver's license in 48 states. When it expires, you legally cannot drive until you renew.

Getting caught driving on an expired REAL ID is a ticketable offense — fines of $40–$500, and in some states an automatic license reinstatement fee.

Renewal usually requires an in-person visit

Unlike a standard license renewal, REAL ID renewals often require in-person appearance at the DMV with original documents: birth certificate or passport, Social Security card, and two proofs of residence.

Book your appointment 60+ days out. In California, Texas, and New York, walk-in wait times can exceed 4 hours; appointment slots book out weeks in advance.

Late renewal can mean starting over

Some states (CA, FL, TX) require you to retake the vision test if your license has been expired more than 60 days. If it's been expired more than a year, you may need the written test and road test again.

The DMV does not send physical renewal notices in every state — the responsibility to track expiration is entirely yours.

REAL ID also affects notarizations, banking, and I-9s

Notaries, banks opening new accounts, and employers running Form I-9 verification will refuse expired ID.

Closing on a mortgage, cashing a large check, or starting a new job all get harder overnight.

Renewing early is almost always allowed

Every state lets you renew up to 6 months (some 12 months) before expiration — with no penalty and no loss of the remaining time on your card.

There is zero downside to renewing early. The downside of renewing late is a stack of ruined plans.

The bottom line

The safest window to renew your REAL ID is 60–90 days before it expires. VaultGuardian reminds you at 90, 60, 30, and 7 days out so it never becomes an airport surprise.
