What happens if your OSHA certification expires?
Federal OSHA policy is that OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 outreach training cards do not have an expiration date. But most contractors, unions, and jobsites require refresher training every 3–5 years — treating older cards as effectively expired.

Union and contractor policies drive the timeline
Most construction unions require refresher OSHA 10 every 3 years, OSHA 30 every 5 years.
Large GCs (Turner, Skanska, Whiting-Turner) require site-specific refreshers regardless of card date.
New York City has stricter rules
NYC's Local Law 196 requires a Site Safety Training (SST) card — with specific hour minimums (40+ hours) — for most construction workers.
SST cards must be renewed every 5 years, with additional 8-hour refreshers required annually.
Confined space, fall protection, and forklift certs expire
Task-specific OSHA certifications (Confined Space Entry, Fall Protection, Forklift, HAZWOPER) have real expiration dates — typically 1–3 years.
Working on a lapsed task cert is grounds for immediate removal from site.
HAZWOPER 40-hour and 8-hour refreshers
Initial HAZWOPER training is 40 hours; annual 8-hour refresher is required to maintain currency.
Missing a year of refreshers requires re-taking the initial 40-hour course ($800+).
Aerial lift and scissor lift operator cards
Aerial Work Platform (AWP) operator certification through ANSI/SAIA is required for most scissor lift and boom lift use, renewed every 3 years.
Losing it means losing access to elevated work — a major portion of some jobs.
First Aid/CPR + OSHA is a common bundle
Many jobsites require OSHA + First Aid/CPR together. Losing either can block site access.
Combined refresher courses run $150–$300 and take a full day.
VaultGuardian tracks every OSHA card, task-specific certification, HAZWOPER refresher, and CPR credential — the paperwork stack that determines who gets on the jobsite.
