Moving to a new state: every document you need to update (and the deadlines)

Moving states isn't just packing boxes. Every state has strict deadlines to update your legal documents — and 'I just moved' is not a valid excuse if you get pulled over.

Quick answer:

Moving states isn't just packing boxes. Every state has strict deadlines to update your legal documents — and 'I just moved' is not a valid excuse if you get pulled over.

First 30 days: driving documents

Driver's license: most states require you to transfer within 30–60 days of establishing residency. You'll need proof of residency (2 items), your current license, Social Security card, and payment.

Vehicle registration and title: usually 30 days. Includes emissions test, VIN inspection, and paying new state's sales/use tax (credit given for tax paid to old state).

Auto insurance: notify your insurer immediately. Premiums may change — sometimes drastically — based on the new zip code.

First 60 days: voter, tax, and health

Voter registration: register in the new state, cancel in the old one to avoid duplicate registration flags.

State tax withholding: update W-4 and any state-equivalent form with your employer.

Health insurance: employer plans usually cover you nationally, but marketplace plans are state-specific and may require re-enrollment. Special Enrollment Period lasts 60 days from move date.

Ongoing: paperwork most people forget

Update USPS forwarding, bank statements, credit cards, and subscription addresses.

Update the address on your passport (Form DS-5504 if under a year old, otherwise wait until renewal).

Notify the IRS with Form 8822. Any pending refund goes to your old address if you skip this.

Update your estate plan — different states have different rules on wills, power of attorney, and healthcare directives.

If you're a small business owner

Register the LLC to do business in the new state (foreign qualification) or dissolve and re-form.

Update EIN's mailing address with the IRS (Form 8822-B).

Register with the new state's tax authority for sales tax and payroll if applicable.
