Marriage license vs. marriage certificate: what's the difference?
People use 'marriage license' and 'marriage certificate' interchangeably, but they are two different documents issued at two different times. Knowing the difference matters when you go to change your name, add a spouse to insurance, or apply for a green card.

The marriage license
Issued by the county clerk before the wedding. It's essentially permission to marry — valid for 30–90 days depending on the state.
Both parties usually apply in person with photo ID and a small fee ($30–$100). Some states have a 1–3 day waiting period between issuance and the ceremony.
The marriage certificate
Issued after the ceremony, once the officiant signs and returns the license to the county. The certified certificate is what you use as legal proof of marriage.
You typically receive one certified copy for free with the return; extra copies cost $5–$25 each from the county.
When you need each one
License: only to actually get married. Once used, it's not proof of anything.
Certificate: name change at Social Security and DMV, health insurance updates, joint tax filing, immigration petitions (I-130), foreign marriage recognition, and estate planning.
Common problems
Officiant forgets to return the signed license to the county — no certificate is ever issued and legally you're not married yet. Follow up 2 weeks after the wedding.
Ordering the certificate right after the ceremony; most counties need 2–6 weeks to register it before certified copies are available.
If you lose the certificate
Order a replacement from the same county clerk (or state vital records office). You'll need photo ID and the approximate marriage date.
Immigration and green card applications require certified copies with a raised seal — plain photocopies are rejected.
