Personal documents (originals + 2 copies)
Passport (all pages, all prior passports), birth certificate with certified translation, I-94 record (print from cbp.gov), all prior visas and I-797 approvals.
For each: bring the original, one copy for the officer, one backup copy for yourself.
Marriage-based cases (if applicable)
Marriage certificate (original + certified translation if foreign). Divorce decrees for all prior marriages for both spouses.
Bona fide marriage evidence: joint tax returns, joint bank accounts, joint lease/mortgage, joint utility bills, photos across time and events, travel itineraries together, affidavits from friends/family.
Bring more than you think you need. Officers may not look at it — but if they ask, having it is the difference between approval and RFE.
Employment-based cases (if applicable)
Current employment verification letter matching the I-140, recent pay stubs (6 months), W-2s for all years in the U.S., resume matching the I-140 job description.
Original I-140 approval notice and PERM labor certification if applicable.
Medical & financial
Sealed I-693 medical exam (if not already submitted). Do not open the envelope.
I-864 Affidavit of Support with sponsor's tax returns, W-2s, and pay stubs. Bring originals of everything the sponsor submitted.
What officers actually ask
For marriage cases: how you met, wedding details, daily routine, in-laws' names, where each of you keeps your toothbrush. They're checking if it's real, not testing memory.
For employment cases: job duties, salary, education, whether the offered position still exists.
Answer directly. Don't volunteer extra information. If you don't understand a question, ask them to repeat it.
