What happens if your green card expires?

You cannot re-enter the U.S. easily
Airlines will often refuse to board you back to the U.S. with an expired card. Border officers may allow entry but will pull you into secondary inspection every time.
You cannot legally work
Form I-9 employment verification requires an unexpired document. Even long-term employees may be placed on unpaid leave when their card expires until they present renewal proof (Form I-90 receipt).
Renewal (Form I-90) currently takes 8–14 months
USCIS processing times have stretched dramatically. The receipt notice extends your card's validity for 36 months while you wait — but you need to have filed BEFORE it expires.
You can be fined $100 for not carrying it
INA §264(e) requires green card holders to carry proof of registration at all times. Fines are rarely enforced but the statute is on the books.
File Form I-90 at least 6 months before expiration. Keep the card, the receipt notice, and biometrics appointment letter in VaultGuardian so you can produce them instantly.
