Expedited passport renewal: costs, timelines, and how to get it in a week
If your trip is under 8 weeks away, standard passport renewal isn't fast enough. The State Department has three faster tiers — expedited by mail, urgent travel appointments, and private couriers — each with different costs and eligibility rules.
If your trip is under 8 weeks away, standard passport renewal isn't fast enough. The State Department has three faster tiers — expedited by mail, urgent travel appointments, and private couriers — each with different costs and eligibility rules.
Tier 1: expedited by mail ($60 add-on)
Add the $60 expedite fee to DS-82 or DS-11 and mail it in. Current processing is 2–3 weeks plus mailing time on both ends.
Pay for 1–2 day return shipping ($21.36) or your new passport comes back regular mail and negates the speed you paid for.
Tier 2: urgent travel appointment at a passport agency
If you travel within 14 days (or need a foreign visa within 28 days), book a Regional Agency appointment through the State Department's 1-877-487-2778 line.
You'll typically leave the appointment with a passport in hand or receive it within 5–7 business days. Bring proof of travel — boarding pass, itinerary, or hotel booking.
Tier 3: private courier services
Private couriers (RushMyPassport, Fastport, ItsEasy) can turn a passport in 24–72 hours for $200–$800 in service fees on top of the government's $60 expedite fee.
They don't work magic — they hand-carry your paperwork to a passport agency. Skip them if you can book your own agency appointment.
Common mistakes that kill your timeline
Missing the passport photo spec — even one shadow — bounces the whole application back to standard processing.
Forgetting to include your old passport with a DS-82 renewal. It has to physically ship with the application.
What counts as proof of urgent travel
Booked flights, cruise itineraries, or hotel reservations dated within 14 days. Screenshots of pending bookings are not accepted.
For visa emergencies, bring an embassy letter or visa appointment confirmation showing the 28-day window.
Track your passport in VaultGuardian and you'll never need to pay for expedited service. Alerts start at 6 months out — enough time for standard $130 renewal instead of a $500 courier bill.
