You legally cannot drive — period
Driving on an expired license is a ticketable offense in every state. Fines range from $40 to $500+, plus court fees.
If your license has been expired more than a year in many states (CA, TX, FL), you may need to retake the written and/or road test.
It's no longer valid ID
TSA, banks, notaries, employers running I-9 verification, and even bars will refuse an expired license. Domestic flights, medical appointments, and rental contracts all get harder overnight.
REAL ID adds another wrinkle
As of May 7, 2025, TSA requires REAL ID compliant licenses for domestic flights. An expired license — even if it was REAL ID — will not be accepted.
Insurance may deny claims
If you're in an accident with an expired license, your auto insurer can deny the claim on the grounds that you weren't legally permitted to drive.
