What happens if your concealed carry permit expires?
A concealed carry permit is one of the few documents where letting it lapse can turn a lawful daily habit into a felony overnight. Every state handles renewals differently, and 'grace periods' are the exception, not the rule.
A concealed carry permit is one of the few documents where letting it lapse can turn a lawful daily habit into a felony overnight. Every state handles renewals differently, and 'grace periods' are the exception, not the rule.
Carrying on an expired permit is a crime in most states
In roughly 30 states, carrying concealed with an expired permit is charged the same as carrying without a permit at all — a misdemeanor or felony depending on jurisdiction.
Penalties commonly include $500–$5,000 in fines, up to 5 years in prison, permanent revocation of firearm rights, and loss of the ability to reapply for 5–10 years.
Reciprocity ends the moment it expires
If you carry across state lines, an expired permit voids every reciprocity agreement instantly. What was legal 100 miles ago is now a felony.
This trips up frequent travelers, truckers, and rural residents who cross state borders daily.
A 'grace period' is rarely a legal grace period
Some states allow late renewal without retaking training — but that's an administrative grace period, not a legal one. You still cannot carry during it.
Confirm your state's specific rule with your issuing sheriff's office or state police, in writing.
Late renewal often means starting over
States like Florida, Texas, and Ohio treat a permit expired more than 6 months as a brand-new application: full background check, new training certificate, new fingerprints, new fees ($100–$200+).
You lose the reduced renewal fee, and the full application can take 90+ days to process.
Training certificates can expire too
Most states require the training course be completed within a specific window (often 3–5 years) before application.
Retaking a state-approved course is another $50–$150 and a weekend of your time.
Notify your firearm-carrying employer
Armed security guards, licensed private investigators, and off-duty officers using CCW for employment must notify their employer of any lapse — carrying at work without a valid permit is grounds for immediate termination and potential criminal charges.
How to renew on time, every time
Renewal windows typically open 90–180 days before expiration. Filing early costs nothing and prevents lapses.
Complete required refresher training first — many states won't accept a renewal application without a current training certificate on file.
VaultGuardian tracks your CCW expiration alongside required training certificate dates and reminds you 90, 60, and 30 days out — plenty of runway for fingerprints, courses, and paperwork.
